Vermont's First Ronald McDonald Care Mobile ProgramTo Provide Comprehensive Dental Care to Underserved ChildrenBurlington, VT - September 15, 2009 - A collaboration between the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), The Health Center in Plainfield, and other Health Centers in Vermont will bring high-quality dental services directly to the underserved and uninsured children who do not have access to a dentist in the State via the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile Program. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobile is a 40 foot, 26,000 pound traveling dental clinic donated by Ronald McDonald House Charities. Staffed by professionals, this state-of-the-art vehicle will provide comprehensive pediatric dental care to children (ages 0-21 years) in Grand Isle, Orange and Lamoille counties at several school sites which have been identified. It will have two patient examination rooms, a reception and medical records area. It will join 37 other Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles currently providing direct health care services to underserved children around the world. The fully equipped RMCare Mobile is leased to a clinical partner at no cost for a minimum of five years with the understanding that the operational costs are assumed by the clinical partners along with the support of our local RMHC of Burlington, VT. On September 24, we will have a launch celebration at the Ronald McDonald House in Burlington with Gov. Jim Douglas, Dr. John Matthew and other community representatives beginning at 10:30 a.m. On September 28th, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will begin making visits to several public schools in Grand Isle County that were identified as having a high percentage of students in the free or reduced-cost lunch program. They are Alburg Elementary, Isle La Motte School and Grand Isle Elementary Schools. Other schools identified to be served by the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile are in Orange and Lamoille Counties. The professional staff traveling on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile on a rotating basis to the school sites include two dentists -- Emily Smith and Gaurav Malik; two hygienists-- Ariel Maxfield and Gaylen Northway; dental assistant -- Buffy Farrell; Driver/Manager - Steve Warren and Administrative Coordinator - Lisa Silk. The dental staff will provide services ranging from exams and X-rays to fillings, extractions and sealants along with preventative educational materials. An estimated 2400 medically underserved children per year will receive comprehensive dental care thanks to a specially designed mobile unit unveiled by the Health Center of Plainfield, Little Rivers Health Care, Northern Tier Center for Health, Community Health Services of Lamoille Valley and Ronald McDonald House Charities of Burlington, VT. "Through the launch of the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile program, the RMHC of Burlington, VT hopes to continue its dedication to the health and wellness of children in the State of Vermont, one child at a time," said Pam Fenimore, RMHC Executive Director.
